Spelling

The spelling program we will be using in class this year is a word study approach. It is an open-ended individual process. An assessment is given to determine where to begin instruction. Spelling groups are formed based on student needs and strengths. Foe example, some groups may be working on long vowel sounds while others may be studying short vowel sounds, letter blends, or prefixes and suffixes. Based on assessment results, students are given words to study in order to discover the common attributes. In this manner students are actively constructing their own knowledge of spelling patterns.  Students learn features by completing activities such as word sorting, word hunts, games, and drawing and labelling.  Students work individually, with partners, and in small groups to encourage cooperative learning and individual responsibility.

With the new program, students will be given up to 25 words that can be sorted by sound and/or letter patterns. We will review the word sorts and students will be responsible for practicing their word sorts at home and at school. On Mondays, students will receive two sets of their spelling words: one for home practice and one for school practice.  Students will have time in class to practice "Word Work" activities, using their assigned spelling words. This practice will help reinforce the word patterns and sorting rules. Students will be tested on Friday.

Every five to six weeks, students will be reassessed to determine their progress. Based on the results, students may be moved to a new group, where they will learn and practice new spelling patterns.

Below are some word work activities that students can complete at home, using their spelling words. It is recommended they choose two of these activities to complete at home each week. We will also be working on various word work activities in class so students should select activities that are different from those we are doing in class.
